Navigation is critical to the usability of a website. Navigation should be clear, concise and well organized.
Top navigation can be tricky to plan out. Typically navigation across the top of the page is global to a college, school or division with the left side of the website reserved for 'local' navigation. The biggest challenge with top navigation is the limits imposed by space. Because of this there is typically no room for growth, therefore the navigation items need to be a fixed number of items for the life of the sites design unless time is taken to reorganize the navigation items.
Because the left side of a webpage is reserved primarily for navigation, there are only certain content types that should be applied to this area, namely:
- contact information
- social media links
- approved logos
Other types of content should be placed in the appropriate places in your webpage.
